This kit contains 5 fresh Drosophyllum lusitanicum seeds, 5L of Drosophyllum mix, an Italian terracotta pot with plant label.
Drosophyllum lusitanicum, also known as the Portuguese Sundew is an amazing plant distantly related to Drosera. Growing as either an annual or perennial depending on growing conditions, this plant produces beautiful yellow flowers.
Native to the Mediterranean, it likes cool wet winters and warm dry summer.
It is a true collectors plant, not only because of its unique growing preferences, but also because it presents a challenge in cultivation. Plants don’t tolerate root disturbance, especially once mature. The most successful way to grow Drosophyllum is from seed.
Plants should be sown and in terracotta pots to help prevent their roots being keep too wet. Sow two or three seeds per pot in autumn and winter. Keep outside and moderately moist.
Young seedlings can be very carefully transplanted (avoiding disturbing the roots) to their own larger terracotta containers.
Drosophyllum prefers open soil media containing Sphagnum peat moss, perlite, propagating sand and pumice. Unlike many other carnivorous plants, it prefers a slightly alkaline pH.
It is best to grow the plant in full sun and bright open light year round.
